Modbury
A wide 1950s and 60s residential grid with North East Road down the middle, plus the Tea Tree Plaza carpark and the O‑Bahn interchange on the doorstep.
Driving lessons in ModburyTwelve suburbs between the River Torrens and the foot of the Adelaide Hills. Each one drives differently, and the list below says how. If yours isn’t here, call anyway, nearby areas can often be arranged.
The north‑eastern suburbs sit on a wedge of the Adelaide plain between the River Torrens and the escarpment. Three arterials frame the whole area: North East Road down the middle, Lower North East Road running parallel and closer to the river, and Grand Junction Road crossing them east to west and finishing at Hope Valley.
Between those arterials the suburbs come in two ages. The 1950s and 60s grids around Modbury and Holden Hill are wide, regular and quiet, which is where first lessons belong. The suburbs master‑planned from the 1980s, Golden Grove and Wynn Vale, swap the grid for curved collector roads and roundabouts almost everywhere. Then the ground tilts at Tea Tree Gully, Highbury and Athelstone, and hill starts stop being an exercise.
The practical upshot for a learner is a short drive between very different conditions. Read the Adelaide roads a learner driver needs to handle for the road-by-road version, including the O‑Bahn interchanges and the South Australian speed rules.

Driving lessons in ModburyWhere the suburbs meet the Hills escarpment. Hill starts and blind crests are ordinary driving here rather than set‑piece exercises.
Driving lessons in Tea Tree GullyMaster‑planned from the 1980s around curved collector roads and roundabouts instead of traffic lights, so it teaches a different skill set from the older grid suburbs.
Driving lessons in Golden GroveGrand Junction Road ends here where it meets Lower North East Road, one of the busier junctions in the north‑east. Behind it, quiet streets ring the reservoir reserve.
Lower North East Road runs through it and the River Torrens forms the southern boundary, so the streets rise away from the river towards the foothills.
Built around the Paradise O‑Bahn interchange and its park‑and‑ride, which means steady bus movements and turning traffic near Lower North East Road.
Lower North East Road crosses the middle of the suburb, about nine kilometres from the city, and Gorge Road and Montacute Road head east from here towards the hills.
Gorge Road runs west to east through Athelstone before it narrows and climbs into the Torrens Gorge. The suburb sits right against the hills face.
In the foothills, bounded by Gorge Road, Montacute Road and Newton Road, so three roads with quite different characters meet inside one small suburb.
Sits between Lower North East Road and the River Torrens linear park, with the Hope Valley reservoir reserve trails on its northern side.
North East Road and Grand Junction Road both pass through, which makes it one of the most useful places in the north‑east to practise multi‑lane arterial driving.
Established in 1985 next to Golden Grove and laid out the same way, so expect curved streets and roundabouts, with The Grove Way running past it.
