Driving lessons in Modbury

Modbury gives a learner almost everything in one suburb: quiet post-war residential grids to start on, a major arterial to build up to, and one of the busiest shopping-centre carparks in the north-east.

One-to-one lessons with Stacey, a female driving instructor covering Modbury and the surrounding north‑eastern suburbs. Automatic lessons in her car, and manual lessons in yours.

What driving in Modbury is actually like

Modbury is one of the older north-eastern suburbs, laid out in the 1950s and 60s, so the residential streets are a wide, regular grid with generous verges and relatively little traffic outside school times. That makes it unusually forgiving for first lessons. The complication is what runs through the middle of it.

Because Stacey lives and works in the north‑east, lessons run on the roads you will keep driving once you are licensed, rather than an unfamiliar area across town.

Roads you will learn on in Modbury

Lessons build from the quiet end of this list towards the busy end. Nobody starts on the arterial.

Arterial

North East Road

The main road through the district and the spine of the whole north-east. Multiple lanes, frequent signalised intersections and constant lane changes. This is usually one of the later things a Modbury learner tackles, not an early one.

Connector

Smart Road

Runs east to west past Modbury Hospital and carries steady traffic between North East Road and the foothills. Useful for practising sustained 60 km/h driving and merging without the intensity of the arterial.

Connector

Milne Road & Reservoir Road

Mid-level roads that link the residential pockets to the arterial. A good middle step: real traffic, but predictable and without heavy lane discipline demands.

Quiet start

Residential grid off Golden Grove Road

Wide, low-traffic streets with clear sightlines and plenty of kerb space, which is what you want for the first hour behind the wheel.

The parts of Modbury that catch learners out

These are the specific things worth practising here on purpose, rather than meeting for the first time on your own.

Tea Tree Plaza carparks

The Westfield Tea Tree Plaza carpark is the single best parking classroom in the area and the hardest. Tight bays, pedestrians in every direction, cars reversing without looking, and ramps between levels. Quiet early on a weekday it is genuinely useful practice; on a Saturday it is not.

The O-Bahn interchange

Modbury Interchange is the terminus of Adelaide’s O-Bahn busway, so buses enter and leave the area constantly and the surrounding roads have bus lanes and priority signals. Learners need to be comfortable giving way to buses pulling out.

Hospital precinct

Around Modbury Hospital on Smart Road expect ambulances, a lot of turning traffic, and drivers looking for parking rather than at the road.

School zones

Several schools sit inside the residential grid, which means 25 km/h zones at drop-off and pick-up. Worth practising deliberately rather than avoiding.
