Logbook hours, CBT&A and the VORT explained

South Australia gives you two routes from a learner’s permit to a provisional licence. This page explains the difference in plain terms, and says plainly which one Stacey takes you through.

VORT

Vehicle On Road Test

One practical driving test with a government examiner at the end of your learner period. You log your supervised hours, then book the test.

Assessed by
A government examiner, on the day
Suits
Learners who would rather do most practice with family and sit a single test
With Stacey
This is what Stacey prepares you for, and you can sit the test in her car

CBT&A

Competency Based Training and Assessment

Assessed progressively through lessons instead of by one test. Each competency is signed off as you demonstrate it, so there is no single pass-or-fail day.

Assessed by
An instructor accredited for CBT&A
Suits
Learners who find one high-pressure test harder than steady assessment
With Stacey
Not offered here. If CBT&A is what you want, you will need an instructor accredited for it

Stacey teaches test preparation

Lessons here build towards the Vehicle On Road Test: the skills the examiner assesses, the roads you are likely to be taken on, and enough repetition that the test is not the first time you have done any of it under pressure. Competency Based Training and Assessment is a different arrangement and is not offered.

When the test comes, you can sit it in Stacey’s car. See the test day package.

Your logbook

A logbook records the supervised driving you do on your learner’s permit: date, duration, conditions, and who supervised you. It is the evidence you present when you apply for your provisional licence.

Every lesson with Stacey counts towards it. More usefully, the logbook doubles as the syllabus: your driving companion book lists every task you have to be able to do, and lessons work through those tasks one at a time rather than driving around until the hours add up.

Where the exact figures live

The number of supervised hours, the night-driving component and the minimum time on a permit are set by the South Australian Government and can change. Check the current rules on the SA licensing pages before you count on a figure.

Common questions

Do lessons count towards my logbook?

Yes. Every lesson goes into your logbook. Bring it to each lesson and it gets filled in as you go, rather than reconstructed later.

How does Stacey work through the logbook with me?

Everything you have to demonstrate to pass your assessment is set out in your driving companion book. Stacey breaks each procedure down and walks you through it, task by task, until you are meeting the standard required rather than just getting through it.

Can I sit the test in Stacey’s car?

Yes. The test day package is $440: the examiner’s fee, which Stacey can organise and pay directly when the test is booked, plus the use of her car and an hour’s warm-up lesson immediately before you are assessed.

Do I still need a permit for either route?

Yes. Both routes require a current South Australian learner’s permit, held for the minimum period, before you can be licensed.
